GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Grand Junction police are asking drivers to slow down and watch for children around school buses ahead of National School Bus Safety Week, October 19–23.
The department’s October 13 announcement emphasizes stopping for flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, watching for students boarding or leaving a bus, and allowing children room to cross safely.
Police also highlight danger zones around buses, including the area approximately 10 feet in front, to the sides and behind the vehicle. Children in those areas can be difficult for a driver to see.
Drivers should follow the applicable traffic rules and avoid distractions whenever students are near the roadway. The department’s reminder is part of the national school bus safety campaign.
