GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Grand Valley Transit is adding three paratransit buses with more wheelchair capacity through a $758,691 purchase approved October 6, Mesa County announced October 8.

The Federal Transit Administration will cover 85 percent of the cost, or $644,877. The local share is $113,804.

Each bus can accommodate 12 passengers and five wheelchairs. The county said that expands accessibility compared with the two-wheelchair capacity common in its current vehicles.

The buses will use compressed natural gas, with some fuel produced at the Persigo wastewater treatment facility. The county said CNG vehicles cost approximately $30,000 to $50,000 more than diesel models to buy, but offer lower fueling costs.

The announcement did not specify when the buses will enter service.
