GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Mesa County’s proposed 2027 budget would reduce the number of budgeted positions by 61 as officials address financial pressures while maintaining core services.
The proposal, released October 7, lowers the budgeted workforce from 1,249 to 1,188 positions, roughly 5 percent. That does not mean 61 layoffs: the county describes a mix of vacancies, frozen positions, organizational changes and reductions tied to lost grant funding.
The proposal includes $252 million in revenue and $31.9 million in fund balance use. It also carries forward $19 million in capital projects and provides $5.4 million in TABOR refunds from 2025 revenue through property tax credits in 2027.
The general fund plan lists $94.9 million in revenue and $100.7 million in spending, with $5.7 million in fund balance use, according to the county’s figures.
The budget remains a proposal and may change before adoption, scheduled for November 17. Residents can review budget materials, send comments to [email protected] or attend commissioners’ regular Tuesday meetings at 9 a.m. at 544 Rood Ave.
